What you will be able to do
- Tell a client, at consultation, exactly which freehand service they are asking for and what it will cost across how many visits
- Choose a lightener and developer combination for the hair in front of you rather than the one you always use
- Place sections so the light lands on the planes of the head that actually catch it, working with the haircut instead of against it
- Blur a root shadow so a grow-out is soft at twelve weeks rather than banded at six
- Control underlying warmth by level, and pick a direct or oxidative toner on purpose
- Explain bond builders honestly, including what they do not do
- Book the right amount of time, take the right deposit, and hold the maintenance conversation before the colour rather than after it

About this course
Balayage is the most requested and least understood service on most price lists. Six different techniques get booked under one word, the client arrives with a photograph of something that took three appointments, and the stylist has ninety minutes in the diary. That mismatch — not the painting — is what produces the awkward conversation at the mirror.
This course takes freehand colour apart and puts it back together in the order you actually meet it: what the client is asking for, what the hair will allow, where the light needs to land, how much lift you can safely take, and what it costs. The painting itself is the shortest part of the course, because it is the part you can already do. Placement, lift control and toning are where the results come from, and where the money is.
It is written for stylists who colour every day and want the reasoning underneath the technique, so that when the hair does something the tutorial never showed, you know why and what to do next.

Questions
- Will this teach me to colour from scratch?
- No. This is continuing professional development for stylists who are already qualified and already colouring. It assumes you can section, mix and apply safely, and it works on the judgement layered on top of that. If you are not yet qualified, the route in is a Level 2 hairdressing qualification with a college or approved training provider — not an online course, and not this one.
- Does the certificate mean I can offer balayage?
- If you are a qualified stylist with the relevant professional indemnity insurance, you can already offer it. The certificate evidences eight hours of verified CPD in freehand colour, which is what an insurer or an employer wants to see. It is not itself a licence or a qualification.
- How long do I get access for?
- Buy the course outright and access is yours permanently, including any updates we make to it. On the monthly membership you have access for as long as you subscribe — but a certificate you have earned is yours to keep either way.
- Is there a practical assessment?
- Not on this course. It is assessed by an online end-of-course assessment plus a short written case study of a real client consultation. If your insurer requires practical assessment for a technique that is new to you, arrange that separately — we say so plainly rather than implying an online course covers it.
- I trained years ago. Is this too basic?
- The chemistry module assumes no more than a Level 2 foundation and then goes well past it. Stylists who trained before bond builders and open-air lightening were standard tend to find modules 3, 6 and 7 the most useful part of the course.
